2 SUPER Important Google Updates for for Home Care Websites in 2018, and How We Can Help

Is Your Home Care Website Ready for the Google Changes Starting July 2018?

Is Your Home Care Website Ready for the Google Changes Starting July 2018?

I just wanted to give you some additional details on 2 announcements from Google that may affect your website(s).

This past Thursday, Google announced on the Chromium blog that ALL HTTP (non-ssl) sites will be marked as “not secure”
beginning in July 2018. (So if your website does not start with HTTPS, you are affected.)

With Chrome holding 59.32% of the desktop browser market share and 59.13% of the mobile browser market share…this is a big deal!

Combine this announcement with the mobile speed ranking announcement (below)….and July is really shaping up to be a whopper of a month for Google changes!

Let’s Talk SITE SPEED first…

People want to be able to find answers to their questions as fast as possible —studies show that people really care about the speed of a page. Although speed has been used in ranking for some time, that signal was focused on desktop searches. Today we’re announcing that starting in July 2018, page speed will be a ranking factor for mobile searches.

This is a big deal for you, your clients and your prospective clients.

Slow loading sites stand to lose their rankings if they are not optimized before July 2018.

What do you need to do?

1. Test your website(s) to see what their current load speed is.

How do we do this?

1. We use sites like Pingdom or GTMetrix to determine how fast our website is. If it’s greater than 3 seconds you should make the recommended changes to improve speed.

When you run a test use the FULL URL. Example: http://www.HughesHomeCare.net

1. If you’re on WordPress, we recommend installing a combination of W3 Super Cache and Cloudflare. Both free, but the set up is specific and best left to a web developer.

How Can LTC Expert Publications Help?

2. If you meet the following criteria, we will do this (speeding up your site) for free.

LTCEP Clients: You do NOT need to submit a support ticket or even make a request. We will be moving through all sites over the next few months to make sure they are JULY speed ready!

  • You must be our client. (!!!)
  • We must have BUILT and HOST / MANAGE your current WordPress website.
  • You must give us access to your registrar account- (Godaddy.com / Networksolutions.com etc)

3. If you are NOT our client, here are 5 tips to consider:

  • Hosting/Hosting Server – Use a free site like bitcatcha to test your web hosting. If your web hosting
is slow…you need a new web host.
  • Themes & Plugins – Think your theme or a plugin may be slowing your site down? Get rid of them.
  • Graphics – Unoptimized mages are one of the top causes of slow web pages. Optimize your images
    using a site like BulkResizePhotos.
  • Databases – If your site uses a modern Content Management System like WordPress, your database
can become full of unneeded data like post revisions. Optimize your database.
  • Long Pages – If you create long sales pages it can take a while for the full page to load. Consider
using a plugin or scripting to load images as the user scrolls down your page.

Doing all of these things will decrease your website load time and keep the Google ranking engine happy.

Now, if your site utilizes WordPress…I have good news for you. LTC Expert Publications would be happy to move your site over to our servers and keep it optimized for speed. If we manage and host your site, we will take care of the rest. Call us to find out more 888-404-1513.

Let’s Talk HTTPS (SSL)

You Have to July to Install SSL or Google will mark your site “Not Secure”

Chrome 68, due out in July, will warn users about HTTP sites.

The time has come for all websites to migrate to HTTPS. You have until July when Chrome 68 releases.

Google and the rest of the browsers have been working on this for a long time. Last year Google and Mozilla began the push towards universal encryption by changing the UI on their browsers. In addition to the padlock icon, any website with SSL is marked “Secure.”

The idea was that website owners would gradually adopt SSL as more and more features were being taken away.

The browsers also began marking HTTP sites “Not Secure.” This was done more gradually. The warnings started out just warning users when they were about to enter a password in an unencrypted field. Then in the Fall they turned up the volume even more and started marking any HTTP page with text fields “Not Secure.” Now, with the release of Chrome 68 in July, Google is cranking it up to 11. Any website served via HTTP is going to get the “Not Secure” indicator.

What’s the Big Deal with HTTPS?

HTTP is ancient by computer standards. It’s a protocol for communication and it worked fine for a while. Unfortunately, HTTP is not secure. When you make an HTTP connection with a website that connection is not secure. That means that anyone can eavesdrop on the connection and steal or manipulate any data passed back-and-forth.

HTTPS is secure. When you make a connection with a website the data being sent is encrypted. That essentially makes it worthless to anyone without the corresponding key. Beyond security, HTTPS also blocks ISPs from injecting ads on your website, it is faster and performs better than HTTP and, finally, you have to have encryption in order to use HTTP/2, which is becoming more widely adopted by the day.

What do I need to do?

You need to install an SSL certificate and migrate your website to HTTPS. Before you order one though, take stock of what you need to secure. You may just have a single domain or you may have something more complicated like sub-domains or even multiple domains, in which case you’ll want to find the right certificate. Don’t worry, there’s a diverse set of offerings that cover just about every use case.

Next you’ll need to migrate to HTTPS, you can do this by changing the protocol in your URLs to HTTPS, then using 301 redirects. You may also want to take the time to add your website to HSTS preload list.

Either way, the key takeaway is that you have until July to get an SSL certificate, lest you anger Google.

And trust me, no one wants to cross Google.

How Can LTC Expert Publications Help?

If you meet the following criteria, we will do this (speeding up your site) for A FEE. (VERY TIME CONSUMING, BUT WORTH IT!) Most general SSL Certificates have an annual fee of somewhere around $50. We will also charge a one-time  labor cost for our time.
